HEALING SOUNDS

for a harmonious writing experience

In the spirit of wanting to help you shift consciousness into the place

where your writing flows easily and genuinely from within,

I offer you this healing-sounds-meditation recording of overtone chanting for writers.

Sequence of six images showing the sun peeking through trees, with the title 'Overtone Chanting' above.

It is brief — under two minutes — yet its effects may resound (much like the sounds themselves) in your being for longer. (You can always play the recording again . . . and, if desired, again.)

Overtone chanting is like a rainbow of sound. A single note to start with — in this case, the sound “OM” (without the “M” being fully sounded, so it’s more of an “OH,” with the lips forming a small opening) — opens up into other resonant notes that sound within the cavity of the mouth and rise up through the interior of the face.

OVERTONE CHANTING — AND WRITING

While there is a venerable and ancient tradition of overtone chanting, especially in places like the Tibetan spiritual tradition, the ability to do it just “came” to me years ago. I love to sing, and I probably was just “fooling around” to see what kinds of sounds I could make with vowels only. Or perhaps I was deliberately trying out the effects of making the sound, “OM” (which itself is said to be the seed of all sounds).

However it came about, I noticed that when I shaped my mouth in a certain way, it became a resonant chamber, in which a single starting-note opened up into a rainbow of other, resonant notes. Fascinated, I continued. And I noticed that not only did these multiple resonant notes “give themselves” to me without effort on my part, but I felt wonderful while doing it — while the sounds were vibrating in me. I could feel it in my nervous system, and in a sense of expansion, calm, aliveness, gratitude, and ease.

So I continued doing it, from time to time.

Recently, a spiritual teacher whom I love heard me make these sounds, and suggested that I offer the sounds to the world, since they contained true healing. Her actual words to me were:

“I feel the potency of healing that is transmitted through your overtone singing, and your beautiful being and heart.

“This is wonderful, and greatly needed for the world! I can feel something happen that is good for my energy bodies when I sit quietly and listen completely and fully.

“I even feel the healing effect if I am simply playing this beautiful overtone singing, without being in a meditative state!”

So I offer these healing sounds to you here. May they serve your being, and the writing that flows from it.

As a singer, when I sing I so frequently experience the healing quality of the sounds moving through me, coursing through my body through my breath and moving out on the breath into other people’s range of hearing. Perhaps you might experience some of that healing, even pleasure, in hearing these sounds. Perhaps they might even invite you to shift consciousness into that place inside where there is both an ease and a movement towards your own deeper expression — including for writing your book.

You can explore my healing songs on my Naomi Rose Music page. Listen for where they take you within yourself in the realms of healing and creative expression.

“The body loves the sound of our own voice,” say sound healers Valerie Carpenter and Vicki Dodd — not necessarily our usual speaking voice, but our ability to make sounds: intimate, spontaneous sounds that move energy, expand our energetic field, and even hold the ability to help heal us. On the “Meditational” page of the “Resources” section on this site, I offer you a meditation for making your own healing sounds, and then writing out of that energized (and, likely, calmed) state.

For a powerful meditation that combines healing sounds with writing, visit my Meditational page, where you'll find a simple three-part meditation called “A Writing Meditation with Sound.”

Whether through hearing or making musical sounds,

you can cultivate a receptive state of consciousness

that allows you to write from your deeper Self

and overcome creative blocks

through sound meditations.

These healing sounds can help you access the place where your authentic writing lives.
