Speak the Writing of Your Heart

From God’s Ear to Your Mouth

If you sense that something in you really wants to be known,

but the very prospect of writing makes you more fearful than eager —

then the following way of writing might be for you.

What could begin as a “Do I have to?” self-imposed assignment could instead metamorphose into a passionately thrilling inner experience of being able to give voice to what is in you, in a way that is truly your own. Once you have this experience, there’s no going back. Never again will you have to view yourself as someone who can’t write.

If this sounds too good to be true — it’s not. I’ve helped people who know they have something to say but couldn’t get it down in writing without great inner discomfort (if they managed to write, at all) to get it down in writing by speaking it.

Not speaking on their own into a recorder. Speaking their writing in the presence of someone who was truly interested . . . a devoted, skillful listener who made the person feel heard and inspired . . . with years of expertise in what a written work needs in order to bring a reader inside its pages.

I call this “speak-writing.”

And you can learn more about it here (about a 10-minute listen):

your choice of three ways to begin

You might not be ready to write a whole book. But you might want to speak-write a short piece to share with others — perhaps as an essay, or a newsletter, or an article for a publication. Or you might want to speak-write just for you — to have the experience and see who you are at the end of it.

Each of these ways will engage my deep listening so you can speak from that inner place that isn’t made up or forced at all — from “God’s Ear” to your own mouth.

1

Speak for Self-Knowing

Speak-write simply to find out what's in you: to navigate a particular passage in your life, or to gather what feels like scattered pieces into a satisfying whole. This can be complete in itself.)

2

Speak a Short Piece of Writing

Then let what you have spoken become an essay, a newsletter, an article, or another short work to share with others that truly sounds like you.

3

Speak Your Book

A wonderful book can come from this same process. You speak until you feel complete; the transcripts are assembled into chapters; the chapters are fine-tuned into writing you love enough to share with the world.

•     For yourself alone. Speak simply to find out what's in you: to make your way through a passage in your life, or to gather scattered pieces into a whole. This can be complete in itself.

•     A shorter piece to share. Shape some of what you've spoken into an essay, an article or a newsletter that truly sounds like you.

•     A book. If a book is wanting to be born through you, we can work together, session by session, until it takes form.

Why speak with me

Speaking into a recorder alone is one thing. Speaking to someone who is deeply interested, skilled at listening, and knows what a book needs is another. My listening is quiet but active: when something wants more room, I invite you to speak to it further. With 30+ years in the publications field, I'm a Book Developer and Creative Midwife, and I'm ordained as a Healing Conductor in the Sufi path of Hazrat Inayat Khan. That healing presence helps what's in you feel safe to come out, in your own voice.

Shira's words go here, credited as you decide (for example, "— a therapist and sound-healing practitioner" to keep the story anonymous).
