We know that animals have feelings, and maternal instincts. Because of the conditioned acculturations that we humans can be hampered by, animals may sometimes more obviously display the mother-child bond. What I loved in doing this drawing was the chance to capture the physical closeness and how it reflects the mother giraffe’s heart. (And giraffes are said to have the largest hearts of all.) See how she nudges her child’s neck and back with her forehead, her nose? It’s so satisfying and delicious to use all of oneself in loving, and to take such clear (if wordless) pleasure in the process. Use this visual mantra to give what poet Mary Oliver calls “the soft warm animal in you” room to be internally felt and known. Let yourself identify with the giraffe calf in a visceral, felt way, being caressed on the neck and the back, which brings both deep comfort and stimulation to the nerve endings. Let yourself identify with the mother giraffe as she uses her body to care for her child and express her heart. You may feel a warm expanding sense and a tingle of joy as you contact your inner loving animal. Carry this giraffe love with you; call on it anytime you wish.
