The eagerness with which the child in this drawing longs for an encounter with the world is both amusing and laudatory. He is so wanting to fly out of his mother’s arms that, if she suddenly were to let go, he would fall. This universally human tension between wanting to go beyond the safety that has held us, but still needing that safety in some form, happens throughout life, not only in early childhood. It comes up every time we feel called to something beyond our familiar boundaries. But if we did not, as children, fully receive this kind of attuned attention, as adults we may not quite know how to balance these two primal needs. Using this drawing as a visual mantra can strengthen your natural will to explore new territory, and at the same time be held in safety. That way, you can take the loving inner parent along with you into your unknown, without being constricted by old forms or needs as the new ones are opening up and coming to meet you.
