“Go Live Your Life, My Love Will Go with You” (Drawing #7 from the “Mother & Child Series”)

This mother with a slightly older child looks down at him with a protective calmness and love, as he leans on her shoulder and looks outward towards the world. There is a phase in child development called “rapprochement,” when the growing inner competence of the child is drawn by the allure of the world — and yet the intimacy and safety of the person of the mother is largely the world the child has so far known. And so the child ventures out a bit, then returns to the mother as home base — and, if received with love, trust, and spaciousness, ventures out again. In this way, the child feels internally safe to explore. When the title of this drawing came to me — “Go Live Your Life, My Love Will Go with You” — it seemed to me one of the greatest gifts that a loving parent can give her child: the knowledge of being loved and the freedom to explore. Using this drawing as a visual mantra can help to impress these two simultaneous gifts of love inside you, and — if needed — help repair what wasn’t historically given, so that you too can know that you are loved and have the freedom to explore.
